Deal names three House floor leaders

Governor-elect Nathan Deal has picked three legislators – one of whom was a Democrat until about two weeks ago – to serve as the administration floor leaders in the House of Representatives.

Rep. Doug Collins (R-Gainesville), Rep. Amy Carter (R-Valdosta) and Rep. Hank Huckaby (R-Watkinsville) were announced Friday afternoon as the House floor leaders for the incoming governor.

The trio are relatively new to the General Assembly – Collins and Carter have each served just two terms in the House, while Huckaby has yet to be sworn in for the first time – and Carter, a Valdosta school teacher, was a Democrat before declaring recently that she would jump to the Republican Party.

Deal will also appoint W. Travis Sakrison, a deputy chief DeKalb County district attorney, as the new director of the Georgia Public Defenders Standards Council.

Sakrison will replace former legislator Rob Teilhet, who was appointed to the job just two months ago by outgoing Gov. Sonny Perdue.  He is married to Marcy Sakrison, the daughter of U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland.
