TV poll shows regional split over Sunday sales

A poll conducted for Atlanta’s WSB-TV shows overall support in Georgia for the legalization of Sunday package sales of alcoholic beverages, but with a divide between poll respondents in Metro Atlanta and in South Georgia.

The statewide poll number was 52-40 percent support for Sunday liquor sales, with 8 percent undecided.

In Metro Atlanta, support for Sunday sales was an overwhelming 67-23 percent.  In less-populous South Georgia, only 31 percent were in favor of Sunday sales while 63 percent were opposed.

Legislation has been introduced in both chambers that would authorize local governments to hold referendums on the Sunday sales issue. Sen. John Bulloch (R-Ocklochnee) authored SB 10 while Rep. Roger Williams (R-Dalton) is the sponsor of HB 69.

Gov. Nathan Deal has said he would not veto such legislation if it passes the General Assembly – former governor Sonny Perdue opposed Sunday sales.
