Deal receives four nominations for Cobb judgeship

Gov. Nathan Deal has been given a list of four names to consider as a replacement for Cobb County Superior Court Judge George Kreeger, who has said he will retire.

The Judicial Nominating Commission has recommended these candidates for the governor to appoint: Cobb State Court Judges Maria Golick and Robert Leonard, Cobb Juvenile Court Judge Juanita Stedman, and Troutman Sanders partner Mark S. VanderBroek.

Deal is expected to pick a replacement from those four candidates, although he can also decide to name someone else if he chooses.

The governor has shown a tendency in recent appointments to go for a “two-fer” when deciding who gets a judgeship. That is, he names a sitting judge to fill a judicial vacancy, which then gives him another judicial vacancy to fill.

For example, Deal recently elevated Keith Blackwell from the State Court of Appeals to the Georgia Supreme Court, which left an open seat on the Court of Appeals Deal filled with Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge Billy Ray.

If Deal follows that strategy in this instance, that would give an edge to Golick, the wife of state Rep. Rich Golick (R-Smyrna), or Leonard.
