House, Senate approve final version of midyear budget

In their efforts to keep the legislative session moving forward at warp speed, the Georgia House voted 166-2 Tuesday morning to agree to most of the Senate’s changes to the $20.2 billion midyear budget for fiscal year 2014.

The House immediately sent the budget to the Senate, along with a minor amendment.

The Senate voted 49-0 to agree to the House amendment Tuesday afternoon, which sent the supplemental budget to Gov. Nathan Deal for his signature.

“The Senate made very few changes from our recommendation, so we’ve been able to work it out without going to a conference committee,” said Rep. Terry England (R-Auburn), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.

One of the final changes made to the spending plan was to add $5.5 million to the governor’s emergency fund to help pay the state’s costs of responding to the two winter storms that swept through North Georgia in January and February.
