Former Athens lawmaker Heard to run for insurance commissioner

Keith Heard, a former state legislator from Athens, will qualify to run for state insurance commissioner, insuring that Republican incumbent Ralph Hudgens will have general election opposition.

Heard’s intentions to run for insurance commissioner were reported by the Athens weekly newspaper, Flagpole.

Heard was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives for 20 years before losing a close Democratic primary election to Spencer Frye in 2012.

Hudgens, also a former lawmaker, is finishing his first term as insurance commissioner. He has gained national media attention by making speeches in which he promised to do “everything I can” to obstruct the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and implied that it was a person’s own fault if they had a pre-existing medical condition.
