Black switches chambers (but not parties) to run for Senate

Sen. Tim Golden’s surprising announcement – on the day before qualifying began – that he would not run for reelection to the Georgia Senate has caused a wild political scramble down along the Georgia-Florida line in Lowndes County.

Rep. Ellis Black (R-Valdosta), a 14-year House veteran, withdrew his papers to run for an eighth term in the House and has now qualified to run for Golden’s District 8 Senate seat.

Lowndes County Commissioner Richard Raines is also running in the Republican primary for that Senate seat, while Bikram Mohanty, a Valdosta occupational therapist, will run as a Democrat.

Black’s House seat is now up for grabs and another Lowndes County commissioner, Crawford Powell of Lake Park, will run in the GOP primary for House District 174.  No Democrats have qualified for that race.
