Ralston names study committee to look at casinos, horse racing

[private]House Speaker David Ralston announced Thursday the members of five House study committees, including one panel that will explore the feasibility of taxing casino gambling and horse racing as possible new sources of state revenue.

The casino committee is authorized by HR 827, which says gaming and horse racing revenues could be used to keep the HOPE scholarship program financially viable.

“It is widely understood that the State of Georgia will have to explore supplemental sources of revenue in order to preserve and expand the HOPE scholarship program for future generations of Georgians,” the resolution says.

The study committee will be chaired by Rep. Matt Ramsey (R-Peachtree City), and includes Reps. Calvin Smyre (D-Columbus), Chuck Martin (R-Alpharetta), Howard Maxwell (R-Dallas), John Meadows (R-Calhoun), Ron Stephens (R-Savannah) and Brian Strickland (R-McDonough).

Other study committees appointed by Ralston:

House Study Committee on Annexation, Deannexation, and Incorporation — Reps. Jan Tankersley (R-Brooklet), chair, and Beth Beskin (R-Atlanta), Mary Margaret Oliver (D-Decatur), Ed Rynders (R-Albany), and Tom Taylor (R-Dunwoody).

Joint Georgia-Alabama Study Committee – Reps. Gerald Greene (R-Cuthbert), co-chairman, and John Deffenbaugh (R-Lookout Mountain), Randy Nix (R-LaGrange), Calvin Smyre (D-Columbus), and Darlene Taylor (R-Thomasville).
