Three special legislative elections set for Tuesday

[private]Special elections will be held Tuesday in three General Assembly districts, with at least two of the elections deciding the occupants of those now-vacant legislative seats.

In Senate District 43, Republican Janice Frey Van Ness, a former county commissioner who chairs the Rockdale County Republican Party, faces off against Democrat Tonya Anderson, who gave up her seat in the Georgia House to run in this special election.

Van Ness finished first in the Nov. 3 balloting with 37 percent of the vote, followed by Anderson with 26 percent support.

The District 43 seat was vacated when Democratic incumbent Ron Ramsey was appointed to a DeKalb County judgeship. The Democratic-leaning district encompasses parts of DeKalb, Newton, and Rockdale counties.

Another runoff in Columbia County will decide the House District 122 race, where longtime Republican incumbent Ben Harbin resigned.

Jodi Lott, a registered nurse and the co-owner of Evans Rehabilitation Services, is running against attorney Mack Taylor, who has been a member of the Columbia County Commission.

Lott was the leader in the Nov. 3 balloting with 41 percent of the vote compared to just under 30 percent for Taylor. Lott and Taylor are both Republicans.

The Senate District 20 election in Middle Georgia could end up in a Dec. 29 runoff because there are six Republican candidates who have qualified. The seat was vacated when GOP incumbent Ross Tolleson resigned for medical reasons.

The candidates are Larry Walker III, an insurance agency owner who’s the son of former legislator Larry Walker; Vivian Childs, the owner of a personal motivation company; Brooks Keisler, the executive vice president of an education software company; Jon Martin, the director of a pharmaceutical company and a Laurens County commissioner; James Pettis, a restaurant and personal care home company owner; and Mike Reece, a business owner.

District 20 includes part of Houston County and all of Bleckley, Laurens and Pulaski counties.
