Senate passes its version of the drone bill

[private]The state Senate voted 51-3 Wednesday to adopt a stripped-down version of a bill (HB 779) that would regulate the operation of drones.

The Senate version removed several restrictions on drones that were part of the original bill introduced by Rep. Kevin Tanner (R-Dawsonville), although the measure would still prohibit the weaponization of drones.

The bill’s main provision is the creation of a Georgia Unmanned Vehicle Systems Commission that would study the economic advantages of drones and recommend regulations on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles. The commission would be disbanded on Dec. 31, 2017.

The House has not voted yet on whether it will agree or disagree to Senate changes in the bill.
