Political Notes — State BOE sets hearing on charter school termination

[private]The state Board of Education has agreed to proceed with a hearing that would terminate the Department of Education’s contract with Macon Charter Academy and shut down the Bibb County charter school.

Board members voted unanimously in a Friday morning conference call meeting to set an Aug. 18 hearing, where Macon Charter Academy will be allowed to respond to recommendations that the school’s charter be terminated.

Macon Charter is currently immersed in Chapter 11 reorganization proceedings, but the bankruptcy judge ruled this week that state and local school boards could move forward with regulatory proceedings to close the school.

The state school board hearing will be held more than two weeks after the new school year starts for Bibb County public schools.
