Latino support grows for Clinton, Obama in new poll

[private]Latino voters support Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama by healthy margins in a recent poll released by Fox News Latino.

Clinton had a 46-point lead over Republican nominee Donald Trump, 66-20 percent.

That represented an increase of 7 percentage points in Clinton’s favor since a similar poll was conducted in May.

Trump’s level of support compares to the 27 percent Latino support that Republican Mitt Romney received in the 2012 election. Romney was defeated by Obama, prompting some Republican Party leaders to say that the party needed to improve its outreach to Latino voters.

Poll respondents were asked: “As you may know, Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential running mate, Tim Kaine, speaks Spanish. Does this make you more likely to vote for Clinton, less likely, or does it make no difference to you?”

Only 11 percent said it made them more likely to vote for Clinton, while 86 percent said it made no difference.

The same poll showed Latino voters’ approval of Obama was at nearly its highest level since he took office. By a 67-28 percent margin, a majority of Latinos approved of the job Obama was doing as president, despite the fact that his administration has taken credit for deporting a record number of immigrants.

Fox News Latino reported:

Immigration attorney Matthew Kolken said that Obama’s image among Latinos has benefited from the markedly hard line among some Republican leaders – and, now, particularly GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump – on the issue of immigration.

“Despite his abysmal human rights record he still appears pro-immigrant when compared to the anti-immigrant rhetoric coming from Republicans,” Kolken said to Fox News Latino. “The other reason is that traditional media outlets have protected the President by declining to fully vet and fact check what he says about his immigration policies against what he is actually doing to devastate to immigrant communities.

“The bottom line is that when it comes to immigrant rights the Obama presidency will be remembered as a stain on the history of this country.”

The telephone poll was conducted from August 7-10 and surveyed 803 Latino registered voters, with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points. The poll was conducted under the direction of Anderson Robbins Research and Shaw & Company Research.
