Southern acquires Oklahoma wind facility

[private]A subsidiary of the Southern Co. — Southern Power — has acquired a 147-megawatt wind-powered generation facility in Oklahoma from Apex Clean Energy.

The Grant Plains wind facility is Southern Power’s third such Apex facility in Oklahoma, added to the adjacent 151-megawatt Grant Wind facility and the 299-megawatt Kay Wind facility.

Apex Clean Energy is managing the construction of the wind facility and will operate it upon completion.

“The acquisition of the Grant Plains wind facility is an important step in strategically growing our renewable energy portfolio,” Southern Power President Buzz Miller said. “This project aligns with our business model and underscores our commitment to developing wind generation.”

Southern Power said it now owns more than 2,400 megawatts of renewable generation from 31 solar, wind and biomass facilities.
