[private]Five people qualified this week to run in the Dec. 13 special election to replace state Sen. Charlie Bethel (R-Dalton), who was recently appointed an appellate judge.
Conda Goodson, Charles “Chuck” Payne, Michelle “Shell” Underwood, and William Vinyard qualified to run as Republicans in the special election in Georgia Senate District 54. Debby Peppers qualified as a nonpartisan candidate.
Goodson ran against Bethel in the Republican primary this year but drew less than 25 percent of the vote.
Senate District 54 covers Gordon, Murray, Pickens, and Whitfield counties. A runoff election will be held Jan. 10 if necessary.
