Albany State, Darton State merger finalized

[private]The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has approved the consolidation of Albany State University and Darton State College, just over a year after the merger was first announced in November 2015.

With that approval in hand, the Board of Regents is expected to give the consolidation its final signoff in a telephone meeting on Friday.

“The approval by SACSCOC is the critical step needed in showing the University System’s commitment to the Albany community and southwest Georgia,” Chancellor Hank Huckaby said. “Creating the new Albany State University will allow us to create an even greater impact on the economy and higher education for the citizens of the region.”

The consolidation will reduce the number of institutions in the University System from 29 to 28.
