Regents approve ‘new’ Albany State, 2 presidents

[private]In a series of routine votes Friday, the Board of Regents finalized the consolidation of Albany State University and Darton State College, then appointed presidents of Albany State and Valdosta State University.

Art Dunning, already the president of Albany State, will be president of the merged version of Albany State and Darton (which will also be called Albany State University).

Effective Jan. 1, the latest consolidation reduces the number of institutions in the University System to 28 (at one time, there were as many as 35).

“The University System of Georgia is committed to the Albany community and to serving southwest Georgia,” Chancellor Hank Huckaby said. “The new Albany State University represents a long-term investment to better serve students, faculty and staff through public higher education focused on the needs and opportunities for today and well into the future.”

The regents also named Richard Carvajal, currently interim president of Darton State, as the new president of Valdosta State effective Jan. 1. He will replace Valdosta State interim President Kelli Brown, who has held that job since June 1.

Before he became Darton’s interim president last December, Carvajal had been president of Bainbridge State College since January 2011.

“Dr. Carvajal is a proven leader in the System having already led two USG institutions,” said Huckaby. “I am looking forward to what he will bring to Valdosta State and the Valdosta community.”
