Payne wins special election for Senate seat

[private]Republican Chuck Payne won a special runoff election Tuesday to claim the Senate District 54 seat in Northwest Georgia.

Payne, former chair of the Whitfield County Republican Party, defeated independent Debby Peppers by a 65-35 percent margin and will replace Charlie Bethel, who’s now an appellate court judge, in the Georgia Senate.

Payne, a retired Juvenile Court probation officer, won despite media reports that revealed he had filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, listing $8,420 in credit card debt and $3,390 in consumer bank loan debt.

With his victory, the Senate retains a partisan edge of 38 Republicans to 18 Democrats.
