Senate passes craft brewers bill

[private]The Georgia Senate voted 49-2 Thursday to pass legislation, SB 85, that would finally allow craft brewers to sell their beer at retail.

The only no votes were cast by Sens. Bill Heath and Greg Kirk.

Georgia had been one of the last states to retain an 80-year ban on retail sales by brewers.

Sen. Rick Jeffares (R-McDonough) called the bill “a great compromise” between the craft brewers and the beer wholesalers, who historically have been at odds on the retail sales issue.

“Does this mean we’re passionate about beer?” Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) asked.

“Absolutely,” Jeffares replied.

SB 85 now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
