Isakson recovering from back surgery

[private]Staffers for U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson confirmed that the senator underwent back surgery Thursday at Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta and was recovering at home.

Isakson was admitted to Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital on Monday for a scheduled operation on his back to address spinal deterioration. Dr. Keith D. Osborn of Resurgens Orthopaedics performed the surgery, according to a statement from the senator’s office.

“I’m extremely thankful for Dr. Osborn and the wonderful medical team at Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital for their excellent care,” Isakson said. “I look forward to returning to Washington with a new and improved back to continue working harder than ever on behalf of Georgians.”

Isakson’s office said he will remain at home the rest of this week and next week while he is recovering from the surgery, then return to Washington.

The surgery is the latest medical malady to beset the 72-year-old senator, who was just reelected to a new six-year term.  He also is dealing with Parkinson’s disease.
