Trump spokesman calls 6th CD election a ‘loss’ for Democrats

[private]Jon Ossoff’s failure to win the 6th Congressional District election without a runoff was characterized as a “big loss” for the Democratic Party by Donald Trump’s press secretary, Sean Spicer.

“They ran to win last night and they lost,” Spicer said Wednesday. “Anything short of describing that as a loss is sort of inconceivable to me in the sense that’s literally what they said their goal was to do.”

Spicer added: “I think this was a big loss for them. The bottom line is they went all-in on it. They said that they — their goal was to get over 50 percent. They came up short.”

Ossoff polled 48 percent of the vote Tuesday, leaving him just short of the 50 percent plus one necessary to avoid a runoff election. He and Republican Karen Handel will fight it out on June 20.

The surprisingly strong race by Ossoff caught Trump’s eye, with the president sending out tweets attacking Ossoff in the race’s final days and making a robo-call urging Republicans to get out and vote.

Trump credited himself with staving off an Ossoff victory, tweeting just after midnight Tuesday: “Despite major outside money, FAKE media support and eleven Republican candidates, BIG “R” win with runoff in Georgia. Glad to be of help!”

Ossoff had a different take on the state of the race, sending out a statement: “This is already a remarkable victory. We defied the odds, shattered expectations, and now are ready to fight on and win in June.”
