Abrams files papers for governor’s race

[private]House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams (D-Atlanta) filed the paperwork Tuesday with the state ethics commission to register a campaign organization for the governor’s race next year.

Abrams had indicated some time ago she would probably run in the Democratic primary for the state’s highest elected office. Other potential primary candidates include state Rep. Stacey Evans (D-Smyrna) and Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson.

Jason Carter, the 2014 Democratic nominee for governor, has not definitively ruled out another race.

Abrams, an attorney and the author of several romance novels, was first elected to the Georgia House in 2006 and has been the House minority leader since 2011.

Her efforts to increase the registration of African American voters have won her national media notice as well as the enmity of Secretary of State Brian Kemp, who’s running as a Republican for governor.

She lists Allegra Lawrence-Hardy of Atlanta as her campaign chairperson and Emily Ellison as her campaign treasurer.
