Cancer coverage bill for firefighters is signed

[private]Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation (HB 146) mandating that local governments provide minimum levels of cancer insurance coverage for their firefighters.

HB 146 requires fire departments to provide coverage for firefighters who are diagnosed with specified cancers. The departments will have to insure each firefighter who is diagnosed after having served 12 consecutive months with the department.

“This legislation is much better than the proposal from last year and will be even more beneficial for Georgia’s firefighters,” said Sen. John Albers (R-Roswell), who sponsored the Senate version of the bill.

“By providing firefighters with critical insurance coverage, we stand by our promise to support them and their efforts,” Albers said.

Deal vetoed the firefighters insurance bill last year, but signed this version into law.
