WXIA poll says 6th District race between Ossoff, Handel is tied

[private]The 6th Congressional District race between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel is in a dead heat, according to a new poll commissioned by WXIA-TV.

With the runoff election a week away, the poll conducted by SurveyUSA shows both candidates at 47 percent, with 6 percent undecided.

SurveyUSA conducted the same poll for WXIA three weeks ago, with that survey showing Ossoff holding a 51-44 percent lead.

The polling firm said it has since changed the sampling of the people surveyed:

“Some of the change in outcome poll-on-poll may reflect sampling vagaries and not reflect actual movement in the contest. Today’s survey has fewer high-school educated respondents and fewer lower-income respondents than did SurveyUSA’s sample 3-weeks ago. Both high-school educated voters and lower-income voters back Ossoff. Today’s sample is older than SurveyUSA’s release 3 weeks ago. Older voters back Handel. If you see these 3 differences as bugs not features, you can argue that Ossoff is today no worse off than he was 3 weeks ago.”

A poll conducted last week for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution also had Ossoff with a 51-44 percent advantage over Handel.

Recent polls conducted for WSB-TV by Landmark Communications show Ossoff with a narrower lead of one or two points in the runoff race.
