Major insurers warn Senate about ‘Unworkable’ Trumpcare proposal

[private]Two major health insurance groups, including Georgia’s largest healthcare insurer, are telling the U.S. Senate leadership that a provision of their Trumpcare bill proposed by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is “simply unworkable.”

The Cruz amendment “would undermine protections for those with pre-existing medical conditions, increase premiums and lead to widespread terminations of coverage for people currently enrolled in the individual market,” said Blue Cross Blue Shield and America’s Health Insurance Plans in a joint letter to Senate leaders.

Cruz’s amendment, the “Consumer Freedom Option,” would allow insurers to sell stripped-down, cheaper health plans that do not cover all of the mandates contained in the Affordable Care Act.

“This would allow the new plans to ‘cherry pick’ only healthy people from the existing market making coverage unaffordable for the millions of people who need or want comprehensive coverage, including, for example, coverage for prescription drugs and mental health services,” the insurers said in their Senate letter.

“As healthy people move to the less-regulated plans, those with significant medical needs will have no choice but to stay in the comprehensive plans, and premiums will skyrocket for people with preexisting conditions,” the insurers said. “This would especially impact middle-income families that that are not eligible for a tax credit.”

The Senate’s latest version of Trumpcare is being scored by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to determine what its impact on the healthcare market would be. The CBO estimated that the last Senate version of the bill would have resulted in 22 million Americans losing health insurance coverage.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had planned to call a Senate vote this week on the newest version of Trumpcare, but that vote has been postponed because of Sen. John McCain’s absence due to minor surgery.

Georgia Sens. Johnny Isakson and David Perdue are expected to vote for whatever version of Trumpcare makes it to the Senate floor.
