DOT board will vote on pay raise for McMurry

[private]The State Transportation Board has scheduled a special meeting for Tuesday to discuss and probably finalize a huge pay raise for DOT Commissioner Russell McMurry.

Board members have been talking about a $100,000 raise for McMurry, a beneficence inspired largely by the DOT’s quick work earlier this year in repairing and replacing a collapsed bridge on I-85 in Atlanta.

If the pay bump is approved, McMurry’s compensation will increase from $250,000 to $350,000 a year — which is twice the salary of Gov. Nathan Deal, the putative head of state government.

In terms of compensation, McMurry has been in the right place at the right time during his career at DOT. When the veteran engineer became commissioner in 2015, the Transportation Board upped his salary from $185,000 to $250,000.

In related developments, the DOT board members voted this week to elect Jamie Boswell as chairman, Ann R. Purcell as vice chairman, and Tim Golden as secretary.

Boswell, an Athens businessman, has been on the board since 2013 and moves up from the vice chairman’s position.

Purcell, from Rincon, and Golden, from Valdosta, are both former legislators, Purcell in the House and Golden in the House and Senate.
