Yes, Vincent Fort really is running for mayor

[private]State Sen. Vincent Fort made official what he’s been promising to do for years: qualify to run for mayor of Atlanta.

“Atlanta means everything to me,” Fort said after qualifying at City Hall. “I’ve dedicated my entire career to fighting for justice and advancing progressive ideals that lift everyone up, make our laws fairer, and our economy more inclusive.”

The longtime senator surprised many of his legislative colleagues, who had speculated that he would talk a lot about running for mayor but would never take the actual step of qualifying.

That’s because they figured that Fort, who has served as Senate minority whip during his more than 20 years in the General Assembly, would choose in the end to stay in the Legislature.

But he is officially listed as a candidate for mayor now along with Mary Norwood, Ceasar Mitchell, John Eaves, Kwanza Hall, and Keisha Lance Bottoms. Several other candidates are expected to join the fray by the time qualifying closes on Friday.
