Political Notes — Alabama Republicans are sticking with Moore

[private]Top officials of the Alabama Republican Party will not disqualify Senate candidate Roy Moore from the ballot and will stick with the controversial nominee who’s been the target of sexual harassment accusations.

The 21 members of the state party’s steering committee met for several hours Wednesday and decided that, at this point in time, they will not withdraw their support from Moore.

Even if the Alabama committee members had decided to disqualify Moore, under Alabama law his name would have remained on the ballot.

That state decision contrasts with the efforts of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republican senators who have demanding that Moore get out of the race because of the toxic allegations that have been lodged against him.

Senate Republicans were hoping that Donald Trump would support their attempt to get Moore out of the race, but Trump has declined to comment on the matter.

The inaction from the state committee leaves the Senate race as one between Moore and Democrat Doug Jones, a former U.S. attorney, with the voters deciding the issue on Dec. 12.

Christine confirmed as U.S. Attorney

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday confirmed Bobby Christine of Evans as the new U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia.

Evans has been a private attorney in Columbia County and also served as a part-time Judge of Magistrate Court.

“Bobby Christine has served our state and nation in countless ways, including in the U.S. military as Judge Advocate General in Iraq, and I look forward to his continued service as U.S. attorney,” said Sen. Johnny Isakson.

Ralston appointments

House Speaker David Ralston has appointed three members of the Joint Study Committee on the Establishment of a State Accreditation Process: Rep. Brooks Coleman (R-Duluth), Co-Chair, Rep. Beth Beskin (R-Atlanta), and Rep. Howard Maxwell (R-Dallas).

The study committee will review the potential establishment of a state accreditation process for public schools and school systems in this state.
