Political Notes — Jeffares resigns early from the state senate

[private]Rick Jeffares said Friday morning he is resigning his state Senate seat “to focus 100 percent” on his campaign for lieutenant governor.

“This campaign has taken off more quickly than I expected and there are so many requests to hear our message and exchange ideas that I can’t imagine being able to do this while still representing my district the way my constituents deserve,” Jeffares said in a statement.

“I’m excited about Georgia’s future and believe that our citizens deserve a full-time candidate for the full-time job of lieutenant governor,” Jeffares said. “The 17th district also deserves full-time representation, and [House member] Brian Strickland has my full faith and endorsement.”

A special election will have to be called to replace the McDonough Republican in the Senate, but the winner of that election will likely miss most of the upcoming General Assembly session.

If state Rep. Brian Strickland (R-McDonough) does opt to run for the vacant Senate seat, that would trigger yet another special election in his House district.

Jeffares is running against state Sen. David Shafer (R-Duluth) and former House member Geoff Duncan in the GOP primary for lieutenant governor. Shafer has said he will not resign early.

Anti-Kemp rally

Liberal groups seeking to recall Secretary of State Brian Kemp from office have scheduled an all-day rally for Friday at the Central Presbyterian Church across from the state capitol.

The Georgia Alliance for Social Justice is teaming up with other progressive organizations to gather signatures for a potential recall of Kemp that would, in their words, “protect election integrity.”

Walker steps down

Larry Walker has decided to retire from the Board of Regents effective at the end of the year.

Walker, a Perry attorney, was a member of the Georgia House for 32 years before stepping down from the legislature in 2004. He later served on the State Transportation Board before being appointed to the Board of Regents in 2010.

Walker is the father of state Sen. Larry Walker III (R-Perry).
