Political Notes — Lawmakers will adjourn the session March 29

[private]The House and Senate leadership have agreed upon their calendar for the rest of the 2018 General Assembly session.

The particulars are contained in SR 631, which both the Senate and the House adopted Thursday morning, but the key dates are Feb. 28 and March 29.

Feb. 28 is crossover day (day 28 of the session), the day by which a bill must have been adopted in at least one chamber to stay alive for the rest of session.

March 29 is the day for “sine die” adjournment, and there supposedly won’t be any slopover of the session past 12 midnight as has happened in recent years.

“We will adjourn no later than midnight,” Senate Majority Leader Bill Cowsert (R-Athens) said.

McDonald’s disappointed

Public Service Commissioner Lauren “Bubba” McDonald has long been one of Donald Trump’s most faithful supporters, but even McDonald is “disappointed” by Trump’s announcement that he will impose a 30 percent tariff on solar cell imports.

“Even though I was the first statewide elected official to support President Trump and have been supportive of the President so far, I am disappointed in his decision,” McDonald said.

“These tariffs will increase the price of the solar panels,” McDonald said. “Where there is increased price, there is lower demand, and lower demand means fewer installations and fewer jobs.”

“Though the decision is disappointing, there is some light at the end of the tunnel,” McDonald said, because the 30 percent tariff will be reduced by 5 percent each year for the next four years, with a final tariff of 15 percent.

Deal appoints DA

Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed Assistant District Attorney John Herbert Cranford Jr. as the district attorney of the Coweta Judicial Circuit. Cranford will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the former district attorney, Pete Skandalakis.

Cranford earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a law degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University.
