Facebook will build data center east of Atlanta

[private]Social media giant Facebook announced Wednesday it will build a $750 million data center in an industrial park near Social Circle, fully operational by 2020.

The Newton Data Center will be located in Stanton Springs, a business park that was launched by the Joint Development Authority of Jasper, Morgan, Newton and Walton Counties. The facility will encompass 970,000 square feet and create up to 100 jobs.

“As a company, Facebook is committed to creating positive impact at the local level – that means hiring, partnering and investing locally,” said Rachel Peterson, vice president of data center strategy at Facebook.

The Newton Data Center will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy and cooled by using outdoor air instead of energy-intensive air conditioners.
