Shafer hit with sexual harassment complaint

[private]Sen. David Shafer (R-Duluth), a powerful state senator and leading candidate for lieutenant governor, is the target of sexual harassment complaint filed by a longtime female capitol lobbyist.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was the first media outlet to report the filing of the complaint with the Secretary of the Senate’s office this week.

Shafer denounced the accusation as “false” and an attempt to harm his campaign for higher office.

“For the better part of 20 years, my family and I have devoted ourselves to serving the people of Georgia, but there is an ugly and revolting underbelly of politics, and this deceitful allegation is an example of that,” Shafer said in a statement issued Friday.

“This false complaint is about politics, not the truth, and that’s why it is no coincidence that it was filed the day after I qualified to run for lieutenant governor,” he said.

From the AJC report:

In the fall of 2011, the lobbyist said Shafer requested they meet at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

“He said, ‘you don’t have to have sex with me,” the complaint said. “We can just spoon naked. I just want to see you naked.”

After turning him down, the lobbyist was convinced Shafer would hurt her clients. He eventually stopped talking to her.

The complaint says the lobbyist reported Shafer’s behavior to several people, including leaders in the Legislature.

The lobbyist has retained Atlanta lawyer Bruce Harvey, who said in a statement:

“My client filed this complaint in good faith under the new procedures passed by the General Assembly. We trust that the Senate will carefully investigate the misconduct of Senator Shafer and also protect my client’s confidentiality and prevent any retaliation as the rules require”

“These are serious charges that warrant a thorough review. And we stand behind every allegation in that complaint,” Harvey said.

Shafer, who was first elected to the state Senate in 2002, is running to replace Casey Cagle as lieutenant governor.
