Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota has demonstrated this week why he is so irritating to the pundits on talk radio and other conservative fronts. The newbie senator introduced an amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill that would punish contractors if they “restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court.”

The Senate hearings on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor begin this week. One of the witnesses Republicans are calling to testify will be Frank Ricci, the New Haven, Conn., firefighter who filed the anti-discrimination Ricci lawsuit decided recently by the Supreme Court.

Looking beyond the borders

Taking a look at some political developments outside the boundaries of Georgia: The Minnesota Supreme Court is expected to rule within a few days on the long-running dispute between Democrat Al Franken and Republican Norm Coleman over who will be declared the winner of the race for Coleman’s old seat in the U.S. Senate.
